Frequently asked questions

Why does ScreenSense need Screen Recording permission?
ScreenSense takes a screenshot on each request so it can answer questions about what you're looking at. The screenshot is sent to Anthropic's Claude API for processing and discarded immediately after the response is received. Screenshots are never written to disk on ScreenSense servers and never retained. macOS requires the Screen Recording permission for any app that captures the screen — there is no way to make ScreenSense work without it.
Where is my data stored?
On your Mac. Conversation history (your prompts and the AI's responses) is stored locally in a SQLite database on your device, used to power follow-up questions. It never leaves your machine. The ScreenSense backend stores only your email, current credit balance, and minimal usage metadata for billing — not the content of your questions or answers.
How does pricing work?
50¢ free credit on signup, then top up from $5 minimum. Most questions cost around 7¢, so $5 typically buys 50–70 questions. Complex multi-screenshot requests cost more, but every single question is hard-capped at $1 — you can never be charged more than that for one answer. The exact charge is shown in the app after each response. Credits never expire.
Is it open source?
Not yet. The signed builds are public on GitHub Releases; full source may follow once the product is more mature.
Will there be a Windows or Intel Mac version?
v0.1.0 is Apple Silicon only (M1 and later). An Intel Mac build is possible if there's demand — email support@tryscreensense.com to register interest. Windows is not currently planned.
